Milonga Shoonya — Argentine Tango

  • Shoonya Dance Centre 41 Stapelplein Gent, Vlaams Gewest, 9000 Belgium (map)

Argentine Tango comes to Shoonya for a full Sunday evening — an open-level class, a practica, and then a milonga that runs until late.

The evening is led by Gisela Graef Marino and Sergio Molini, who teach the weekly Argentine Tango classes here on Thursdays. Gisela brought Argentine Tango performance to Paris in 1984 and danced at the Folies Bergère in 1994 alongside Pablo Verón. Sergio trained at Maurice Béjart’s school in Brussels, joined the Ballet of Teatro San Martín in Buenos Aires, and came back to Belgium in 1991 to help build the tango community here. Together they founded Brussel Tango in 1997, now Estación Tango.

The class is open to all levels and is followed by a practica. In their own words: “Tango practice differs from Milonga in that you can stop and start a figure again. La Pratica is neither a course nor a milonga. It is useful for correcting details, trying movements, exchanging with your partner and/or changing roles in a relaxed atmosphere.”

From 18:00 the floor opens for the milonga. Your ticket for the class includes entry to the milonga; you can also come for the milonga alone.

On the dance floor: proper dance shoes, socks, or barefoot — no outside shoes.

Nearest station is Gent-Dampoort, about a ten-minute walk.
