Argentine Tango Workshops with Rita: Musicality & Milonga

Discover the world of Argentine Tango in a 2-part workshop series at Shoonya Dance Centre with acclaimed dancer and wonderful teacher, Rita Hendriks.

WORKSHOP 1: MUSICALITY & RHYTHM

Tangos with a simple tick-tack rhythm, double time rhythms, vocal tangos, lyrical tangos… they all require a different interpretation in the dance…

Starting from basic steps & caminadas, we apply various rhythms, we learn to “phrase” and make musical stanzas.In this workshop, therefore, no figures are discussed, but you get insight and analysis of the tango music in order to add more "color" to your dance.

WORKSHOP 2: MILONGA

Discover the Milonga, a wonderful, relaxed dance style where the focus is on speed and rhythm.

We teach you the basics and fun variations of this lively, playful dance, predecessor of the Tango.

Beginners and experienced dancers welcome, bring your enthusiasm and comfortable shoes and let yourself be carried away by the infectious rhythms.

ABOUT RITA HENDRIKS

Rita graduated from the Kon. Ballet school Antwerp in 1974.She danced at Kon. Ballet v. Vlaanderen, the Landestheater Detmold and the Stadtheater Bielefeld(D).

Back in Belgium she obtained the pedagogical diploma as a dance teacher, and worked as a free-lance dancer at the Arena theater Ghent (musical) for various TV shows and theater productions.

For many years she taught classical ballet, jazz dance and modern dance in various schools. In 1984 she returned to the Royal Ballet School, where she was head of the costume department, teacher of make-up, rehearsal and stage manager.

She was associated with NTGent for 4 seasons as a costume designer, choreographer and she played in the productions Het Bal & Titanic.

In 1992 she started with Pol Van Assche with the Argentine Tango and quickly became his regular dance partner. Together they gave many performances and demos with the orchestra Alfredo Marcucci, and the Philharmonie conducted by Dirk Brossé

For more than 30 years she has been sharing her passion with all those who want to learn the beautiful dance form of Argentine Tango, in group or private lessons.
