Shoonya Dance Centre - What is & What's to come!
We recently opened doors to our new location and final destination for the Shoonya Dance Centre. Currently in its pop-up phase the Shoonya Dance Centre is and will be your one-stop destination for dance in the city of Ghent and around. With a wide variety of dance styles taught by professional teachers, we definitely will be the place to be to learn dance, watch performances and connect with the dance community from all around Belgium.
Currently in the pop-up phase we are only able to utilise 300 m2 of our full 1200 m2. We have also named our 3 current studios depending on their final function. For example, Studio cafe will become a part of the cafe when the entire building is up and running.
BEHIND THE WALLS OF OUR POP-UP STUDIOS
Built in 1914, this beautiful Art Deco style building hosted the office to take the steam boat across the street and get to various destinations in Europe including London, through the rive Thames. Exquisite phone booths placed at the back of the Art Deco Ballroom were also in use during that time. With its rich history and different purposes, most recently being a restaurant, the old building is now undergoing major renovation for its final function as a space where dancers and other artists get together, build connections and grow together.
What is the pop-up phase?
In it’s pop-up phase the Shoonya Dance Centre has 3 studios of different size:
All of our current classes can begin to run smoothly at these studios. Although the Studio Cafe and Studio Basement are nothing compared to the 5 other dance studios we will have in our final phase; we have already made sure to equip them well. With Harlequin dance floors, that exist only in certain prime performing arts centre’s and studios around the world — we made sure that our students bodies are safe from injuries.
We have also opened up a cafe that serves only biological and organic drinks so that our community can keep growing. With state of the art music systems and technological advancements including an app for your phone; we are building towards making it very easy for our students to follow day-to-day information about the happenings at the Shoonya Dance Centre.
In the coming months, the Shoonya Dance Centre will be ready and we will invite you to celebrate this exciting journey that has unfortunately taken much much longer than expected.
The final phase will see:
5 state of the art studios that will range from 200 m2 to 400 m2
A dormitory where guest teachers and dance companies can be hosted ( a maximum of 15 people)
The same dance floors, that are sprung and adapt to your weight
The same loving teachers and organisers that make the Shoonya Dance Centre what it is now and what it will be in the future.
Once again, we thank you for your continued support and we hope that you would bear with us just for a little bit more until you see the fruit of all our effort.
